New mayor takes office
The new mayor took the oath of office at today's City Council meeting.
The new City Council elected Hildur Björnsdóttir as mayor at its inaugural meeting today.
Björg Magnúsdóttir will serve a one-year term as president of City Council. Einar Þorsteinsson will serve as Chair of the City Executive Council for one year, after which he and Björg will swap roles.
The City Council then held elections for the main councils and committees, with the following results:
- Sports & Leisure Council – Bjarni Guðjónsson, chair
- Preschool and Day Care Council – Sigrún Ásta Einarsdóttir, chair
- Human Rights Council – Þorvaldur Davíð Kristjánsson, chair
- Cultural Council – Rúnar Freyr Gíslason, chair
- School & Recreation Council – Bjarni Fritzson, chair
- Environment and Planning Council – Guðný María Jóhannsdóttir, chair
- Welfare Council – Ragnhildur Alda María Vilhjálmsdóttir, chair
- Elderly Affairs Council – Albert Guðmundsson, chair
The City Council also held elections for other councils and committees.
Key handover at the mayor's office
The City Council took a brief recess following the elections. Mayor Hildur Björnsdóttir and outgoing mayor Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir conducted the formal key handover at the mayor's office.
The City Council meeting resumed after the handover.
Other proposals on the City Council agenda include a review of the capital area's Transportation Charter, a revision of the land-use plan along Suðurlandsbraut, extended swimming pool hours, a private-sector partnership for preschool operations, and the dissolution of the Digital Council. The council will also introduce a proposal to repeal the rules governing flag use at Reykjavík City's administration buildings.
