New addition brings 34 more preschool openings to Hulduheimar
Hulduheimar Preschool in Grafarvogur recently opened a new addition, creating 34 openings. Children from the waitlist have already filled about two-thirds of the new openings, and more will join as the phase-in period progresses.
Ready in just under a year and a half
Construction stayed on schedule, and the addition blends seamlessly with the existing building. All timelines held; crews fenced off the site around Easter 2025, and children moved into the new space on Aug. 24 of last year, reportedly very proud of their new facilities.
The expansion will grow enrollment from 77 to 111 children once all openings are filled. The new addition houses the preschool's oldest age group. It features four separate play spaces, giving children more opportunities for varied play and activities.
"One room is dedicated entirely to block play. Children can work on large building projects there without having to take them apart at the end of each day," says Inga Birna Sigurðardóttir, preschool director.
Designed with children's needs at the forefront
The new cast-in-place building fits well with the older structure while incorporating a range of modern features. The windows, for example, sit lower than before so children can read in the window seats, take in the view, or find a quiet corner to socialize and play.
The new outdoor area beside the addition has also been well received. Inga Birna notes it was designed as a sheltered, versatile space for various events throughout the year. She says they plan to hold both theatrical performances and Christmas dances there. The space can be used year-round, not just in summer.
Collaboration went exceptionally well throughout construction
The preschool director noted that the partnership with everyone involved in the project — counselors, contractors, and builders — went very smoothly. BÓ smiðir ehf. handled the construction, and the collaboration was exceptional; the project had minimal impact on the preschool's daily operations. With the site fenced off, daily life at the preschool continued alongside construction.
"There was really only one time the power had to be cut, and we ordered pizza for everyone," says Inga Birna with a smile.
The children also enjoyed watching the construction. Heavy machinery, excavators, and other equipment attracted considerable interest, and there was always something new to see at the construction site.
Once construction concluded, crews restored the grounds and completed all finishing work to an exemplary standard. Neighbors have welcomed the expansion, and Inga Birna says some have even remarked that the addition blends so naturally into its surroundings that it looks like it has always been there.
"That's probably the best compliment you could receive. The building fits seamlessly into its setting while giving children better facilities and more space for play and learning," she says.
