Applications are now open for the Ellý Katrín Scholarship, an annual grant awarded to graduate students studying environmental and climate change issues.

The grant supports work on a master's thesis or project and is designed to advance knowledge in the field.

The scholarship is named after Ellý Katrín Guðmundsdóttir, a lawyer and former chief executive officer at Reykjavík City, who was a pioneer in environmental and climate change issues. She led the integration of transportation and environmental policies while managing international climate collaborations, spearheading projects that opened new environmental dimensions for the city. As a result, Reykjavík City established its first greenhouse gas emission reduction goals.

The application deadline is April 30, 2026, and the award will be announced on Sept. 15, Ellý Katrín's birthday. The grant provides up to 500,000 króna, and priority goes to projects related to Reykjavík City or municipalities.

Last year, Steinunn Kristín Guðnadóttir received the scholarship. Steinunn plans to use the grant for her master's project, where she is researching how Icelandic contemporary art connects to climate change issues and how art can shed light on public attitudes toward climate challenges.

Further details are available on the Reykjavík City website. Applications must be submitted via My Pages.
