Vesturport in Gufunes

Heiða Björg and Gísli Örn sign declaration of intent

Vesturport has received conditional approval for grounds in Gufunes, further strengthening the area's creative sector. Gufunes has been called the Creative Industries Village, with efforts focused on attracting film industry companies, and now the theater scene joins the mix.

The mayor announced the conditional lot approval at Friday's Economic and Urban Development briefing, where business and infrastructure development are discussed. Vesturport, known for its innovative approach to performing arts and international recognition, plans to establish operations in Gufunes, announced Mayor Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir, who invited Vesturport representative Gísli Örn Garðarsson on stage for the signing. As is customary with such agreements, this is subject to City Executive Council approval.

Space for life, play and arts

"We're excited to participate in developing cultural activities in an area as exciting as Gufunes. To create a space for life, play and arts in direct connection with future residents. It's certainly exciting to join the growth already flourishing in the neighborhood and make our mark on the city's ongoing cultural life," says Gísli Örn.
At the signing, Gísli Örn recalled that next year will mark 25 years since Vesturport started operations in a small shed on Vesturgata, which is where the group got its name.

Major development in Gufunes

Recent years have seen major development in Gufunes, in both commercial activity and new housing. This development is based on a 2016 idea competition for the area's master plan, and now, a decade later, the transformation is clear. Currently, the next phases of the land-use plan are being drafted, and the conditional lot approval is connected to that work.
