Þorrasel day care to relocate from Vesturgata

""

The City Executive Council has approved the Ministry of Health's request to relocate Þorrasel day care from its current location at Vesturgata 7, allowing the City Center Primary Care Clinic, which shares the building, to expand due to severe space constraints.

A long-running search for a new location for the city center primary care clinic has been unsuccessful. The changes will create a larger primary care clinic with expanded services, including expanded services for older adults. According to the Government Property Agency, the city center primary care clinic could not have continued operating without the expansion.

City Executive Council minutes

Þorrasel offers recreational activities and social engagement for older adults who live at home but need social support. The facility is authorized for 50 day care spaces but regularly serves about 80 people from across the capital area. Reykjavík City's Department of Welfare emphasized that the changes would not reduce the number of day care spaces in Reykjavík and that there would be no service disruption for people who regularly attend Þorrasel. One option under consideration is for Grund to assume operation of the day care spaces currently at Þorrasel.

The Department of Welfare also emphasized that homeless people with significant and complex service needs should receive enhanced primary care, as there is an urgent need for more robust medical intervention for this group.
