During the Winter Lights Festival, a celebration of light and darkness, numerous artists help create a unique atmosphere throughout the city. The festival features three main components: Light Trail, Museum Night, and Pool Night. During Museum Night, museums across the capital area opened their doors, offering diverse and entertaining programs that featured unconventional events designed to give visitors fresh perspectives on the museums. Pool Night featured a special celebration at Laugardalslaug Pool, where visitors enjoyed circus performances and pool side singing. The geothermal beach in Nauthólsvík joined the festivities for the first time, featuring whale songs and music. The Light Trail remained a centerpiece of the festival, with a walking path from Hallgrímskirkja church down Skólavörðustígur to Austurvöllur square featuring 18 light installations by local and international artists. All festival events were free to the public.

The 2026 Winter Lights Festival will take place throughout all six municipalities of the capital area from Feb. 5-8.
