Many people attended the Activity Expo for older adults held in Tjarnarsalur at Reykjavík City Hall this morning.

The Activity Expo featured interesting presentations exploring various ways to improve quality of life by strengthening social activities for older adults.

Mayor Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir discussed aging in Reykjavík and the cultural opportunities, sports and outdoor activities available in the city.

Willum Þór Þórsson, president of the National Olympic and Sports Association of Iceland, spoke about staying active in later years and how it improves mental and physical health.

Líney Úlfarsdóttir, psychologist and project manager for Tölum saman at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Housing, addressed loneliness in her presentation. Her presentation revealed that research shows social isolation among older adults is growing throughout the Western world. Major risk factors that can lead to social isolation include losing a spouse, retiring from work and hearing impairment. To maintain social activity, it's important to participate in all kinds of entertainment through culture, movement and outdoor activities, which are essential for good quality of life.

Among other things, guests had the chance to take rides on a passenger bike that was available on site. The visiting friends with dogs program, run by the Red Cross, attracted a lot of attention. Visiting friends bring their dogs to meet individuals or groups at their homes, nursing homes or other locations where dog visits are requested. The primary role of these volunteers is to offer companionship and comfort.
