Life in neighborhoods - businesses and enjoyment - composite image

The mayor hosts a meeting about business and infrastructure development under the title Economic and Urban Development on Friday, Oct. 10, 2025, at Reykjavík City Hall. The meeting starts at 9am and runs until 10:30am. Light morning refreshments and informal conversation will be available starting at 8:30am. Register now.

Science and innovation; retail and services in city neighborhoods; plus development of larger business areas and stronger industries are this year's meeting focus areas.

Strengthening neighborhood businesses

Business activity in city neighborhoods will be discussed at the informational meeting. Danish expert Peter Bur Andersen from BRIQ group will share their experience working with retail and urban life strategies, placemaking, temporary activation strategies to bring commercial spaces to life, and more.

A survey is currently running among residents about what types of businesses they want in their neighborhoods. Survey findings will be presented at the mayor's meeting. The survey is open and it's quick to answer these three questions.

  • What businesses would make your neighborhood better?
  • Is there anything new and exciting in your neighborhood?
  • Where in the neighborhood is the best place to meet neighbors?

Take part in the survey about retail and service providers in neighborhoods.

Life sciences create value and improve quality of life

Reykjavík Science City will be in the spotlight at the meeting. Dr. Sandra Mjöll Jónsdóttir-Buch will present key findings from a recent mapping of life sciences and health sciences companies in Iceland. The discussion will cover industry growth, opportunities and challenges companies face, and how life sciences can create value, jobs and improved quality of life for society.

New business areas on the city's outskirts

We'll hear about business areas in preparation and where development of new areas stands in the process. Among the highest-priority areas and projects is the eco-industrial park at Álfsnes, where work is underway to develop a development plan and framework plan for the area. Development also continues at Esjumelar. The status of projects at Gufunes and Hólmsheiði will also be discussed.

Registration and participation

The meeting is open to everyone, but registration is required. This is an important forum for managers, entrepreneurs, business owners and others working in the city's business sector, both to hear the meeting content and to network with others during the morning refreshments before the meeting. A live stream will be available for those who cannot attend in person.

Business professionals are encouraged to make time for this event. After registration, you can add the meeting to your personal calendar. Register and add the meeting to your calendar.
