Recycling drop-off at Hofsvallagata to be upgraded with underground containers

Underground containers by the street

Construction is scheduled to begin tomorrow on the redesign of the recycling drop-off at Hofsvallagata (Vesturbæjarlaug pool). Most surface containers will be removed and replaced by underground containers. Containers for textiles and deposit-return packaging will remain on the surface.

Improved site and accessibility

The goal of the redesign is to improve the site's appearance and make recycling more accessible for residents. The recycling drop-off is popular with residents and heavily used. The current location at the entrance to Vesturbæjarlaug has caused congestion for both service users and service parties, and the container collection process also requires improvement. The recycling drop-off will now be moved to Hofsvallagata, improving safety during collection since trucks will no longer need to back up and will be farther from the preschool.

The surface of the site will be redesigned and paved around the containers. Recycling drop-offs with underground containers fit well in established neighborhoods and are more accessible than traditional surface-level sites. Experience from the four sites that have been converted to underground containers shows that site cleanliness has improved and there's less litter left around the containers.

Enhanced services

The site will continue to accept sorted plastic, paper, glass, and metals. Collection cabinets for textiles and deposit-return packaging are planned for the surface.

SORPA bs. handles operations and maintenance at the site for Reykjavík City. This year, service has been upgraded in cooperation with SORPA, and the sites are now cleaned every day of the week. These service improvements have had a noticeable impact, leading to a decrease in resident complaints. However, officials note that work will continue on projects to encourage tidiness at many sites.

The recycling drop-off will remain open at its current location during construction, and no disruptions to resident access are expected.

We look forward to opening a new and improved recycling drop-off!
