Construction is beginning on Vatnsstígur between Laugavegur and Hverfisgata, with the street becoming a pedestrian street upon completion. Reykjavík City and Veitur Utilities are collaborating to renovate infrastructure and enhance the surrounding environment. The project is scheduled to be completed by late summer.

Reykjavík City will replace the soil in the street and install a new surface featuring paving stones and planting beds. The project is being carried out in partnership with Veitur Utilities, which will install new piping for the municipal sewer system, heating, water and electrical services.

Redesign that complements the surroundings

Substantial development has occurred on the eastern side of the street. A small plaza area within the lot opens westward toward the street, and developers have been consulted on its design to ensure visual continuity and cohesive character throughout the space.

Lighting will also be updated with shorter lampposts than those currently in place, matching the standard used in other areas of the city center. The plans include additional vegetation along the street and implementation of Sustainable Drainage Systems. These systems naturally direct stormwater into the soil by leaving portions of the surface unpaved and adding planting beds where water can be channeled.

Consultation and active engagement with stakeholders

Stakeholders have been consulted throughout the planning process. Clear communication with the surrounding area will be prioritized during construction, and every effort will be made to minimize disruption to stakeholders and residents.

Access during construction

Vehicle traffic will be prohibited during construction, but pedestrian and cyclist access will be maintained throughout the entire project. The safety of pedestrians and workers is a top priority.
