The City Executive Council today approved proposals aimed at strengthening internal and external oversight, improving operations and work environments, and bolstering prevention efforts in Reykjavík preschools.

In late August, the Department of Education & Youth was tasked with developing proposals to bolster professional early childhood education in Reykjavík City and enhance the safety, quality, and stability of services for children and families.

Higher quality, better work environment and more efficient processes

The department's proposals, approved today by the City Executive Council, are based on professional standards and the municipality's legal responsibilities. According to the report, implementing these proposals will lead to higher quality, better work environments, and more efficient processes that support professional leadership, greater support, and safety within the preschool community.

The report's proposals fall into the following categories:

  • Response to the Múlaborg preschool case
  • Internal assessment and preschool improvement plans
  • Enhanced support and oversight
  • External assessment of preschools
  • Work environment
  • Prevention

Some proposals fit within the Department of Education & Youth's current budget, while others require additional funding that the finance and risk department is now reviewing. The proposals have been sent to the School & Recreation Council, which will review them at its next meeting.
