Austurstræti opens as pedestrian street

At the opening.

Yesterday, Austurstræti from Pósthússtræti to Ingólfstorg opened as a pedestrian street amid good weather.

Dóra Björt Guðjónsdóttir, chair of the Environment and Planning Council, joined children from Tjarnarborg Preschool to dedicate the street before everyone headed off for hot chocolate and cookies.

This creates an uninterrupted pedestrian area stretching from Lækjartorg to Ingólfstorg. This change follows the city center traffic plan approved in 2020.

Despite the change, goods delivery will still be permitted between 7 and 11 a.m. on weekdays and 8 and 11 a.m. on weekends. People with disability parking permits are exempt from the driving restrictions, and police, licensed practical nurses, and firefighters will continue to have full access to the area.
