Residents can pick up deicing salt at 12 locations across the city. Streets and paths have become extremely icy over the last few days. We encourage residents to take advantage of this Reykjavík City service. City winter maintenance staff have remained on standby due to the icy conditions, salting streets, walking paths, and biking paths as quickly as possible.

Crews have been unable to apply deicing treatments as frequently as needed in some areas, as rapidly shifting weather conditions have created difficult circumstances to manage. Repeated freezing and thawing have complicated all deicing efforts. Crews have deployed equipment to address the issue over the past several days.

Bring a bucket and shovel

The municipal land office wants residents to know that deicing salt is available nearby. Residents can collect sand and salt at district depots in Fiskislóð, Stórhöfði, and Jafnasel, as well as from salt piles located throughout municipal land. The accompanying map shows these locations.

We encourage residents to use this service. Please bring a container, such as a bucket, and a shovel to scoop the salt.

We also encourage residents to wear ice cleats when walking and to exercise caution while these conditions persist.
