Reykjavík City's winter maintenance services now emphasize salting walking paths over sanding. We aim to reduce sand use and rely more heavily on salt when deicing walking paths. This shift will make spring cleanup of paths faster and easier, while also reducing suspended particulates. Crews will continue to salt biking paths.
The official winter maintenance season began Nov. 14, and staff are ready for the months ahead. Although snowfall has been light so far, crews have mobilized several times to deice main roads and connecting streets.
Salt and sand for residents
Reykjavík residents can still collect deicing salt and sand for their homes at the municipal land service center in Stórhöfði during opening hours. Salt and sand bins are also available outside the district depots at Fiskislóð and Jafnasel. It is vital to shovel walking paths when it snows and keep them deiced so that waste collection can proceed normally.
Work crews follow the winter maintenance services response plan when snow falls or ice forms in Reykjavík. Conditions are monitored regularly and crews are deployed as needed.
