Lighting of Imagine Peace Tower

The Imagine Peace Tower lights up on Lennon's birthday, October 9, and illuminates the night sky until December 8, the day Lennon died in 1980. A boat trip to Viðey is offered, allowing you to experience a cozy and peaceful moment during the lighting.

The tower also lights up from winter solstice to New Year's Day. It shines for one week around the spring equinox and on special holidays agreed upon by artist Yoko Ono and Reykjavík City.

About the artwork

The Imagine Peace Tower is the brainchild of artist, musician, and peace activist Yoko Ono, intended as a beacon for world peace.

The artwork takes the form of a "wishing well" from which a tall, powerful light beam emerges. The words "Imagine Peace" are engraved on the well in 24 languages.

The light beam consists of different rays that unite into one strong light. Six light beams travel horizontally through tunnels on a platform around the well and reflect upward using mirrors. The density of light from the tower constantly changes due to particles in the atmosphere, which behave according to Iceland's varied weather.
