Housing Resources for Asylum Seekers

In recent years, the City of Reykjavik has made an agreement with the Directorate of Immigration to provide housing for applicants for international protection. The contract with the Directorate covers services for 220 people. Usually about a quarter of the applicants are children.

Diverse Housing Resources

In the fall of 2020, the City of Reykjavik has about 60 apartments for applicants for international protection which are either rented on the free market or owned by the City or the Housing and Construction Authority. It is important to offer diverse housing resources because the services are being provided to individuals as well as families with many children.

Since 2015, the number of refugees entering the country on their own who receive protection has steadily increased. As of August 2020, 323 individuals and families have received international protection and humanitarian permits, while in comparison, 376 individuals received protection throughout 2019.
