Housing constructed for disabled people

A phased development plan for housing for disabled people is in effect from 2018 to 2030. The plan is based on current waitlist status and projected housing needs for disabled individuals.

New homes

The plan calls for 180-210 new homes by 2030, with 123-141 of those to be completed by 2025.

  • Three apartment complexes totaling 18 units were opened in 2018, followed by two complexes with 12 units in 2019.
  • Three more apartment complexes, with a total of 18 units, will be ready in 2020.
  • Six apartment complexes containing 36 units will be completed in 2021
  • One apartment complex with six units will be finished in 2022
  • The city has begun acquiring 44 units for independent living with appropriate support services.

Since 2018, six apartment complexes for disabled people have opened. Another six are under construction, and approved land-use plans are in place for four more.

Accessible housing

Housing for disabled people refers to residential units that have been made accessible for specific needs or designated for particular groups of disabled individuals. This type of housing should be available in all neighborhoods where development is occurring. The composition of these homes should reflect diversity, an approach based on theories of social capital and its value in communities.
