Citizen's Convention

The Reykjavík Citizens' Convention is a formal platform for residents and the City Council to engage in dialogue about city issues. The goal is to increase participants' opportunities to influence policy making and city governance while giving residents the chance to connect directly with elected representatives through conversations about issues that matter to them.

About the Citizens' Convention
Citizens' Conventions will typically be held annually on specific issues or projects of Reykjavík City, with calls for topic suggestions announced publicly. Residents, city councilors, specialized councils and anyone concerned with these issues can submit suggestions. Multiple issues may be addressed on the agenda of each Citizens' Convention.
The Human Rights and Democracy Office of Reykjavík City is responsible for organizing Citizens' Conventions, working closely with the Digital Council, the Office of the City Council and relevant specialized departments. Citizens' Conventions are announced four weeks in advance through Reykjavík City media channels and other appropriate promotional platforms. Inquiries about Citizens' Convention arrangements can be sent to lydraedi@reykjavik.is.

Resident’s assembly 2024
The first Reykjavík Citizens' Convention focused on issues concerning children ages 0-6. It was held at Reykjavík City Hall in 2024.
In April 2023, the City Council approved a proposal to hold a citizens’ convention on preschool issues and the care of young children. Additionally, the new democratic policy and its action plan call for regular citizens’ conventions on various matters, making this the first convention of its kind in Reykjavík.
