Reykjavík Municipal Archives closed in current form
At a City Council meeting on March 7, 2023, the decision was made to transfer the projects and collection of Reykjavík Municipal Archives to the National Archives of Iceland and close the archive in its current form.
It was clear from the start that the project would be extensive and it made sense to divide it into phases. A proposal was developed for an action plan to transfer the collection and projects, extending through Nov. 1, 2025.
Action plan
The action plan addressed key areas including delivery of paper documents and electronic data from Reykjavík City institutions, consultation and oversight of records management, acceptance of private archives, service from the archive's collection, and access to the website and digital data.
Access to data
We ensured the transfer would be as efficient and cost-effective as possible without compromising service or access to the City's data.
The archive's website, along with the document registers published there and digital reproductions of documents, will remain accessible at www.borgarskjalasafn.is until Nov. 1, 2025, when it is scheduled to be transferred to the custody of the National Archives of Iceland.
