Cycling

The goal of Reykjavík City's walking and biking path system is to enable residents and visitors to travel around the city in a safe, enjoyable, and environmentally friendly way. Reykjavík aims to become a world-class cycling city. It is essential that people can choose to bike as their first choice when it comes to their mode of travel.

Biking Plan

Reykjavík City's Biking Plan is a guide for promoting cycling and developing cycling infrastructure. Increased cycling is economical, benefits the environment, public health and quality of life, and creates a better city.

Objective

The Biking Plan aims to increase the share of bike trips in the city. The goal is for at least 10% of all trips in the city to be by bicycle by 2025.

Future vision

The Biking Plan presents a vision for Reykjavík as a bicycle city with measurable goals for 2025 and planned developments and actions for the period. The plan proposes a minimum investment of five billion króna in new biking infrastructure in Reykjavík during this period. The plan is based on four main objectives, each with measurable sub-goals.

Paths

Full maps are no longer printed on paper, but maps of color-coded key routes in the capital area are now available. Maps are also installed at stopping points around the city to help travelers navigate.

Remember that pedestrians have priority on mixed-use paths.

Snow removal

When it snows or ice forms in Reykjavík, teams work according to the winter service response plan and snow shifts begin. Conditions are monitored regularly and workers are sent out as needed.
