Animals in danger

Reykjavík Animal Services (DÝR) is responsible for capturing and housing stray animals and receiving animals in danger. Animal Services also interact with other organizations, animal owners, their representative associations, and Reykjavik residents. Animal abuse should always be reported.

Animal abuse

Incidents of animal abuse should be reported immediately to the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority or the police. Reports to the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority should be sent through the IFVA Reporting System, but reports can also be phoned in or submitted by email.

Lost Pets

If you find an animal in Reykjavík that you think has been separated from its owner, you can contact Reykjavík Animal Services (DYR) at 822-7820, where the team can help. Most of the time, for example, dogs and cats have microchips that require special microchip readers. If the animal is found outside of Reykjavík, it is best to check with the relevant Health Department or Service Center in that municipality—the police can also help. There are also helpful groups on Facebook.
