Parking garage guidelines
- Drive into the parking garage
- Complete your business
- Before driving to the exit gate, pay at the payment machine or with the app.
Pay at the pay station
Enter your license plate number using the touch screen, press "start payment," select the image of your license plate and then pay. You can only pay with credit cards; cash and coins are not accepted.
If you've already paid but decided not to leave, you'll need to go back to the pay station and pay for the additional time.
When paying with the app, make sure you pay for the correct parking garage:
When using the app, timing doesn't matter — you can pay anytime between entering the parking garage and reaching the exit gate. Camera recognition at the exit gate will then check out your vehicle. If the service user can cancel payment in the app, they haven't selected to pay for the parking garage.
You can only pay with the apps advertised in the parking garages
If the gate doesn't open when entering:
The parking garage is full.
The barrier gate covers the license plate. Watch for vehicles behind you before moving your car—often, you only need to shift it 20–30 cm. Moving forward is often better than backing up, but if you're right at the gate and it won't open, the parking garage is probably full.
Keep in mind that the parking garage can be full even if you see empty spaces — those spots are reserved for subscribers.
Vehicles without license plates cannot use the parking garages because access is controlled by camera recognition. Driving without license plates is not permitted, and Reykjavík Parking Service staff can therefore not assist with registering vehicles that lack license plates.
If the payment machine screen isn't working:
This is usually because the screen is being pressed too hard; the touchscreen works like a phone touchscreen.
If payment in the app isn't working:
The camera may have misread your license plate when you entered (this mainly happens during snow or bad weather). Calling 4113403 to correct the registration should be enough, but if that doesn't work, you'll need to pay at the payment machine.
If the exit gate isn't working:
The most common reason is that payment hasn't been made for the parking space.
If you've selected to pay for the wrong license plate number, you need to pay for your own license plate and then request a refund for the incorrect payment at bilahus@reykjavik.is
In the app, you must select the correct parking garage — the exit gate won't open if you've paid for a different garage or for street parking.
If the parking garage is closed:
The parking garages are closed at night from midnight to 7 a.m., and there is no maintenance service during that time. After closing, short-term visitors can pay with EasyPark and receive a PIN number to enter in the access panel by the pedestrian doors.
But if the vehicle was misread by the camera recognition when entering, this won't work and you won't be able to access your vehicle until 7am the next morning.
This option is generally not recommended and is intended only for those who have accidentally locked their vehicles inside. Drivers are responsible for any costs if their vehicles get locked in the parking garages overnight.
Long-term users:
If more than one vehicle is registered on a subscription, only one vehicle can enter on the subscription at a time; the second vehicle will always be registered as a short-term visitor.
Long-term users can request a PIN number to enter the parking garage at night to retrieve their vehicles. Send an email to bilahus@reykjavik.is.
The PIN number only works if the vehicle is registered in the parking garage; if the vehicle entered as a short-term visitor or if the license plate wasn't registered correctly in the parking garage (for example, due to misreading when there's snow on the license plates), the PIN number won't work.
You can test if your PIN works during operating hours by entering it on the access screen — if it's working, you'll hear the door trying to open.
Assistance 7 a.m. to midnight:
- Service line: 411-3403
- Assistance phones are located at entrance and exit gates
- Email (during office hours): bilahus@reykjavik.is
