Street closures in city center for Nordic Council Session in Reykjavík October 28–31
Streets will close in Reykjavík's city center with increased safety measures in and around the restricted area during the 2024 Nordic Council Session. The Session will be held at Alþingi and Reykjavík City Hall.
The event is the largest Nordic political gathering of the year. It brings together 87 Nordic Council members, prime ministers, foreign ministers, Nordic cooperation ministers and various other ministers from all Nordic countries. Many guests from countries outside the Nordic region will also attend.
Extensive street closures in the city center
The Icelandic state has certain obligations when hosting foreign leaders and is responsible for their safety upon arrival. As a result, there will be extensive street closures in Reykjavík's city center and increased safety measures in and around the restricted area during the Session. Police will handle security. Officers involved in security will be armed while on duty.
In the city center, Vonarstræti will close between Lækjargata and Suðurgata. Templarasund and Kirkjustræti from Pósthússtræti will also close, as well as Tjarnargata between Vonarstræti and Kirkjustræti. (See map)
Street closures take effect at 8am on October 28 and will be lifted at 4pm on Wednesday, October 30.
- City Hall will be closed to the public from October 26 to October 31.
- The City Hall parking garage will close at 8am on October 28 and reopen at 4pm on October 30.
