Vör passenger terminal opens at Viðeyjarsund
The multipurpose Vör passenger terminal at Viðeyjarsund officially opened today. The terminal marks a new chapter for Icelandic tourism while offering a premier space for community events and public life.
Vör is a dedicated cruise ship terminal and the first new passenger facility built in Reykjavík in 60 years, since BSÍ opened in 1965. Replacing the limited, temporary facilities that long served the port area, the terminal marks a milestone in how Iceland welcomes cruise ships. Additionally, the terminal strengthens safety and visitor services while supporting Associated Icelandic Port's goal of increasing turnaround passengers—those who begin or end their cruises in Iceland, spend more time in the country, and contribute greater economic value to the local economy. Vör can accommodate up to 2,000 guests, but it is far more than just a visitor facility. During the off-season, from October through March, the terminal will serve as a venue for a wide variety of events and celebrations.
A meaningful name chosen through a popular naming competition
The name Vör was chosen with clear intention. A deep-rooted Icelandic word evoking a landing place and shelter by the sea, the name welcomes travelers and connects the modern building to Icelandic culture and maritime history. The naming competition drew record participation, with over 3,300 entrants submitting more than 6,000 suggestions.
In a celebratory ceremony today, Mayor Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir officially inaugurated the striking new building alongside Port Director Gunnar Tryggvason.
