Reykjavík primary schools’ fall break runs Oct. 22-26, offering a wide range of activities for children and families across the city. Museums, libraries and other venues offer creative workshops, scavenger hunts, crafts, games and family events. Adults accompanying children receive free admission to City museums during fall break.

By the First Day of Winter, Oct. 24, Reykjavík Family Park and Zoo will be decorated for Halloween. Visitors can take a ghost and monster walk where creatures from folklore come to life, explore a mysterious maze, and join a mask-making workshop, among other activities. There will also be a special Halloween program on Saturday, Oct. 31.

Fun and games at the libraries

City libraries will host a wide range of events, including Halloween crafts, game sessions, scavenger hunts, photography and DJ workshops, a children’s dance party and shadow theater. For example, children’s author Bergrún Íris will visit Reykjavík City Library in Kléberg on Thursday, Oct. 22.

Workshops and scavenger hunts at City museums

During fall break, Reykjavík City Museum will offer a fun program. Árbær Open Air Museum will hold a candle lantern workshop where families can reuse glass jars to make beautiful lights for the darker months. Reykjavík Museum of Photography will offer a drawing workshop related to its exhibits; at The Settlement Exhibition, children can join a scavenger hunt with a little yellow cat and build their own play boats; and the Maritime Museum will hold a net-making workshop where visitors can learn how nets are made and create sea creatures.

Fall break is also an ideal time to enjoy the outdoors, visit the City’s swimming pools or explore the many outdoor recreation areas Reykjavík has to offer.
