Recent counts show studded tire use aligns with seasonal trends, although rates are slightly higher than last year. The studded tire season has ended, and drivers should switch to other tires.

Officials conducted the count on Wednesday, March 4th Results indicate that 42.5% of vehicles used studded tires, leaving 57.5% on other options. This usage rate dropped slightly from the previous count of 43.9% on Jan. 21st

While slightly higher than last year, current rates match recent seasonal trends. On March 5, 2025, studded tires accounted for 39.6% of those surveyed. The rate stood at 38.1% two years ago, 39.7% three years ago, and 40.0% four years ago.

Studded tires wear down asphalt and increase suspended particulates in the city, impacting air quality and residents' health. Drivers can improve air quality in Reykjavík by switching to stud-free winter tires or summer tires when conditions allow.
