Status of preschools in Reykjavík before major enrollment for 2026

Four preschools in Reykjavík will not accept new enrollments this year due to construction. The City expects 277 new preschool openings will become available this year to offset the 169 openings lost due to construction and maintenance. Parents should review their preschool applications by March 2, 2026.

Preschool opening assignments in Reykjavík for fall 2026 begin March 2. Openings are allocated by birth date, with the oldest children receiving offers first for the schools parents chose in their application.

Due to construction, the following preschools will not accept new enrollments:

  • Hagaborg
  • Sæborg
  • City
  • Vinagerði

Goal to increase preschool openings by 119 this year

While 169 preschool openings will be unavailable due to construction and maintenance this year, 11 are expected to return as early as this fall.

The City also expects to offer 277 new preschool openings this year. Of those, 25 at Klettaborg are ready now. Additional openings will become available at Árborg, Brákarborg, Hulduheimar, and Seljaborg preschools, plus a new preschool on Rafstöðvavegur.

Construction status for new preschool openings:

  • The addition at Hulduheimar is well underway, with landscaping scheduled for completion this summer.
  • An additional building and connecting structure will be moved to Seljaborg's grounds in March. Construction is underway, with site work scheduled for completion this spring.
  • Operations will resume at Brákarborg on Kleppsvegur in April.
  • Árborg's facilities have undergone extensive renovation that should be completed by the end of summer. At the same time, an additional building on Árborg's grounds will be delivered, allowing preparations for early childhood education to begin.
  • Units for the preschool on Rafstöðvavegur are expected to arrive in May, with the building expected to be erected in September according to the current schedule. If all goes according to plan, operations could begin at the end of 2026.

Significant increase in preschool openings in 2027

By mid-2027, preschool openings in Reykjavík are expected to increase by 372 at the following locations:

  • New preschool at Fossvogsblettur
  • Additional building on Vesturborg's grounds
  • Additional building on Grandaborg's grounds
  • Additional building on Jörfi's grounds
  • Additional building on Maríuborg's grounds
  • Additional building on Hólaborg's grounds

Officials note that hiring for all positions takes time and enrollment in new openings will be phased in gradually.

Hagaborg moves to Grandaborg

The City has decided to move Hagaborg's operations to Grandaborg's newly renovated facilities on Boðagrandi at the end of February. This will bring Hagaborg's operations, currently at three locations, under one roof. Maintenance work on Hagaborg's facilities is expected to be extensive, requiring the preschool to close temporarily starting Sept. 1. Therefore, Hagaborg will not accept new enrollments for the next school year, but Grandaborg will.

All children currently enrolled at Hagaborg will automatically transfer to Grandaborg, and all Hagaborg staff will be offered transfers. Children at Hagaborg who are in their final year will move to primary school, freeing up openings that will be assigned at Grandaborg in the upcoming major enrollment.

Expansion at Sæborg and no enrollment in newly available openings

At Sæborg, the number of openings must be reduced while the preschool undergoes expansion, so the preschool will not accept new enrollments for the fall. Parents who selected this preschool should update their applications on Vala.is by March 2.

Construction at Borg prevents enrollment

Due to the relocation of Borg/Arnaborg operations to Ármúli and maintenance work at Borg/Fálkaborg, Borg preschool will not accept new enrollments for fall 2026. Parents are encouraged to choose other preschools and update their applications on vala.is by March 2.

Vinagerði will be closed

Vinagerði preschool will not accept new enrollments due to the condition of the facilities and has therefore been closed. Operations are currently at Safamýri 5, but children there will be transferred to other preschools in the upcoming major enrollment.

Anyone who has selected Vinagerði, Hagaborg, Sæborg, or Borg in their preschool opening application or requested a transfer there must change their applications. Questions can be directed to innritun.leikskolar@reykjavik.is.
