Spider silk, lost items and soil remediation at Hringiða

Hringiða projects presented at Reykjavík City Hall

Hringiða, an accelerator for green-solution startups, hosted an event yesterday in Tjarnarsalur at Reykjavík City Hall. The seven participating teams pitched various solutions focused on sustainability and environmental protection. These projects span a wide spectrum, from producing spider silk to manufacturing vinyl records out of sugar beets.

The teams are:

  • Araxni, which produces biotech-engineered spider silk as a plastic alternative
  • E-LÍSA, a software solution that maximizes energy output in geothermal development
  • IORDEN, an automated quality management tool for food producers
  • Loopable, which shreds discarded textiles and converts them into high-quality knitting yarn
  • Ratatag, a QR code system connecting owners of lost items with the people who find them
  • Soil Lagoon, which is working to establish Iceland's first soil remediation facility
  • Thermal Beets Records, which produces sustainable vinyl records from sugar beets instead of PVC plastic.
Alexandra Briem, Chair of the City Executive Council, opened the event

Alexandra Briem, Chair of the City Executive Council, opened the event and highlighted how crucial it is for the city to support innovation and green solutions. "Cities no longer compete just for jobs and businesses — they compete for talented people and great ideas. We want Reykjavík to be the city where ideas are born, grow and thrive," Alexandra said. Reykjavík City has supported Hringiða from the start, and its partnership with KLAK has been essential in making the accelerator a reality.

The seven teams are only two weeks into the six-week accelerator program. They delivered short pitches on their projects, followed by an open discussion with attendees.
