Soft net at Reykjavík City Library
Do you ever feel like your digital life controls you rather than the other way around? Join Reykjavík City Library's event series and let's figure it out together.
Would you like a clearer picture and more control, but aren't sure where to start? What if the library could help you understand the invisible systems that shape our everyday digital lives and regain control of your time and data?
The project is Reykjavík City Library's contribution to Media Literacy Week 2026 and will also run as a full event series from fall 2026 through spring 2027.
Bring your phone, your questions, your experiences and even your frustrations, and join Soft net for weekly time together where we learn with and from one another. Participants share their knowledge and experiences alongside cellphone safety experts and textile artists working with a playful idea: sleeping bags for phones.
We'll explore privacy settings, app permissions and the many hidden layers of digital identity that emerge as technology systems interpret our behavior. Among other topics, we'll look at how digital media draw conclusions about our interests, habits and needs, and how that information influences what we see, read and experience online.
We'll examine our relationship with technology, media and digital life, with critical thinking, creativity and democratic participation as our guiding principles.
The program will include:
- Creative family events at all Reykjavík City Library locations.
- Weekly time together to explore privacy settings, app permissions and what shapes our digital identities, including how systems categorize us based on our interests and behavior.
- Workshops where participants sew phone sleeping bags from Faraday fabric.
- Media soup: relaxed discussion sessions with soup, bread and conversation about the digital society of the future.
