Reykjavík City will mark the 40th anniversary of the Höfði summit by launching an event fund, updating the building's historical exhibit, and undertaking facility improvements. The Höfði Peace Center will also receive additional support.

In October 1986, U.S. President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev held a historic meeting at Höfði. Widely regarded as a turning point that helped end the Cold War, the summit drew global attention and remains a defining moment in modern Icelandic history.

To prepare for the 40th anniversary this fall, Reykjavík City formed a steering group to define its role in commemorating the occasion. The group was tasked with developing promotional ideas, finding concrete ways to highlight the summit's lasting significance, and reinforcing Reykjavík's international standing as a place of peace and dialogue. The working group presented six proposals, which the City Executive Council approved yesterday.

The approved proposals include the following:

  1. The City will establish an event fund to encourage grassroots public participation in the anniversary. This fund aims to support a variety of smaller commemorative events organized by individuals, museums, and arts groups. The fund totals 2.5 million króna.
  2. The Department of Culture & Sports will oversee the initiative, with the City's cultural institutions leading smaller projects to raise awareness of the Höfði summit. These projects include a public outdoor exhibition by the Reykjavík Museum of Photography and a special presentation tied to the Historical Society's forthcoming book on the summit, which Reykjavík City is supporting. The City also plans to develop educational materials to accompany the book for distribution to its primary schools.
  3. The historical exhibit inside Höfði will receive an update, and new signage about the summit will be installed in the surroundings.
  4. Höfði will host public open house events on selected dates, accommodating guests within the building's capacity limits.
  5. The City will explore options for urgent building improvements at Höfði, including accessibility upgrades and expanded restroom facilities.
  6. The Höfði Peace Centre will receive additional support to mark the organization's 10th anniversary. The Höfði Peace Centre's annual conference will take place in the Tjarnarsalur hall at city hall, coinciding with the opening of an exhibition on nuclear weapons from Hiroshima.
