At its meeting yesterday, the Environment & Planning Council approved a proposal to proceed with planning, design, and preparing tender documents for traffic safety projects at several locations in Reykjavík.

The projects are aimed at improving traffic safety, especially for pedestrians and cyclists, and reducing vehicle speeds at sites with a history of accidents or near routes to school. The proposals are based in part on an analysis of recent accident data.

The work will cover several locations across the city:

  • The intersection of Grensásvegur and Miklabraut with speed deterrents in bypass lanes.
  • Reykjavegur at Hofteigur and Kirkjuteigur: traffic calming measures and improved pedestrian safety.
  • Úlfarsbraut at Urðarbraut with traffic calming measures near the school and crosswalk.
  • Holtavegur at Efstasund with a raised pedestrian crossing.
  • Snekkjuvogur at Eikjuvogur with intersection improvements to improve sight lines and ensure safe pedestrian crossings.
  • Flúðasel with a narrowed curve to encourage drivers to slow down on the busy school walking trail.
  • Dyngjuvegur at Langholtsvegur with a widened corner to improve visibility of the pedestrian crossing and intersection. One parking space will be removed for the project.
  • Eskitorg at Litlahlíð with a raised pedestrian crossing and narrowed curves to reduce driving speeds over the crosswalk.
  • Lambhagavegur at Mímisbrunnur with traffic calming measures to ensure traffic safety at the intersection.

In addition, several projects are planned near the new school in Múlar to improve pedestrian safety. The City also plans to rebuild speed deterrents at several locations and improve lighting.
