Production kitchen at Vitatorg closed
The production kitchen at Vitatorg has been closed after Listeria monocytogenes bacteria was discovered during routine sampling. Vitatorg produces more than 900 meals each day that are either sent out for food delivery or served at Welfare Department community centers and assisted living apartments.
Food delivery service will continue without interruption, but unfortunately hot lunch will not be available at the following community centers tomorrow: Vitatorg, Borgir, Hraunbær, Hæðargarður, Árskógar, Hvassaleiti, Dalbraut 18-20, Aflagrandi and Bólstaðarhlíð.
We will work hard to restore meal service at the Department of Welfare community centers as the week goes on. Community center guests will be notified about new arrangements as soon as possible.
Drivers picking up food delivery meals
Starting tomorrow, meals prepared in another kitchen will be delivered to those who receive food delivery. Anyone who received food delivery from the Vitatorg production kitchen today, Feb. 2, should throw it away. Department of Welfare drivers are now collecting the meals and making sure people understand the situation.
Can cause infections in vulnerable people
Listeria can cause foodborne illness, especially in vulnerable people. Vulnerable people include older adults, pregnant women, young children and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms can appear up to three weeks after eating contaminated food.
It's important for people who develop symptoms to see a doctor right away. Symptoms can include mild flu-like symptoms, muscle aches, fever and sometimes nausea and diarrhea.
Working to minimize inconvenience for service users
Rannveig Einarsdóttir, Director of Welfare for Reykjavík City, says they are working hard to resolve the situation quickly. "We are doing everything we can to minimize the inconvenience this causes. We haven't received any reports of serious illness at this time, but we're taking immediate action out of an abundance of caution."
