The City Council decided this morning to abandon plans to build a new middle school in Laugardalur on the so-called triangle behind Laugardalur Ice Rink. The City will consider another location and begin a new consultation process with key stakeholders in Laugardalur about where to place school and sports facilities in the area.

Mayor Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir presented the proposal this morning. "Building a middle school in Laugardalur will create an educational institution that will influence young people's lives in the neighborhood for many decades and leave its mark on all other school activities in Laugardalur. This kind of project is so significant that it needs to be carefully planned and stand the test of time," Heiða Björg says.

Previous scenarios presented in a working group report on project preparation in 2023 will now be reviewed. A working group will be appointed to bring together key stakeholders in Laugardalur for consultation on a future vision.

"Unfortunately, it has become clear that earlier decisions simply weren't built on a solid enough foundation," the mayor says, "and that's why it's necessary to handle this matter better. That's why my proposal was to abandon the earlier plans and reconsider the location through better collaboration with young people, parents, residents and other stakeholders in Laugardalur."
