Outsourcing operations at Reykjavík Family Park and Zoo
The City Council majority — the Independence Party, Liberal Reform Party and Progressive Party — along with the Centre Party, approved a proposal directing the Department of Culture and Sports, in consultation with the Department of Finance and Risk Management, to assess operations at Reykjavík Family Park and Zoo (FoH) and explore opportunities to outsource all or part of its operations.
The zoo opened in 1990, followed by the family garden in 1993. Education has been a cornerstone of the park's mission from the start. Among other activities, children can experience Icelandic farm animals, wildlife, and nature firsthand while learning about the animals' environments, their needs, and the relationship between people and nature.
The park is one of Reykjavík City's valuable public outdoor recreation assets, playing a vital role in preschool and primary school education. Located in Laugardalur at the heart of the city, it is a popular year-round destination for families. Preserving this role and the value the park brings to city residents is essential.
New opportunities for further development
The City Council majority believes Reykjavík City should seek ways to strengthen operations at Reykjavík Family Park and Zoo and enhance its appeal. Substantial opportunities exist for further development, growth, and improvement.
The City could explore whether partnerships with private businesses would create new development opportunities, expand services, and make the park an even more appealing destination. These could include opportunities to expand food services and retail, develop new recreational activities, host more events and enhance the visitor experience. Such partners could contribute new expertise and perspectives, operational experience, ideas and funding to help strengthen operations. Considering more than one option in this context is crucial.
One option would be to explore whether assigning specific aspects of operations to external parties makes sense. Another would be to gauge business interest in a broader partnership to operate and develop the park. A comprehensive understanding of operations is essential when evaluating future arrangements for Reykjavík Family Park and Zoo.
Assessing operations will provide the basis for an informed decision on which operating model best serves the City's long-term interests.
Social Democratic Alliance city councilors abstained from voting on the matter. The Socialist Party and the Left voted against the proposal.
