Open house at Höfði — 40th anniversary of the summit

Hofdi

To mark the summit's 40th anniversary, Höfði will open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10.

Visitors can explore Höfði tomorrow as we mark 40 years since it hosted the summit. On Oct. 11 and 12, 1986, U.S. President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev met to discuss disarmament. The summit drew worldwide attention, and while the leaders did not reach an agreement, the event is widely considered the beginning of the end of the Cold War.

A look at the summit's history

Höfði has served as the official reception venue for the mayor of Reykjavík since 1967. The house has changed little since the 1986 summit. The Höfði sitting room where Reagan and Gorbachev met remains almost exactly as it was, with the leaders' signed guest book displayed in a glass case.

An exhibit detailing the summit's history has been set up on the second floor of this historic house. The exhibit features selected photographs taken in 1986 from the collection of the Reykjavík Museum of Photography. Objects related to the summit will also be on display. The Reykjavík City Museum coordinated the exhibit.

Höfði will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, 2026.

Admission is free, and all are welcome.
