Notice of closures at Laugardalslaug Pool

Laugardalslaug Pool

Officials have decided to relocate all services from the Laugardalslaug Pool grandstand and close the five nearest hot tubs for safety reasons. Built in 1968, the grandstand has been closed to the public for several years under heightened monitoring.

New risk assessment

A new risk assessment of the structure has revealed that alkali and corrosion damage have severely compromised the concrete and load-bearing framework. The assessment's clear-cut conclusions require the immediate closure of designated areas.

Effective today, the five hot tubs south of the grandstand, the steam room, and two of the four private changing rooms will close indefinitely. All services and activities from inside the grandstand will be relocated with restricted access around the structure. All other operations at Laugardalslaug Pool will continue as usual.

Inspections do not indicate that a full collapse of the structure is imminent. Even so, a risk remains that material could break loose from the structure.

Securing the area around the grandstand is the immediate priority. At the same time, planning is underway for the demolition of hazardous sections of the structure in consultation with advisers. The City will share further updates on the project as work moves forward.
