New classrooms welcomed at Ölduselsskóli
Portable classrooms opened at Ölduselsskóli in mid-April alongside extensive maintenance work at the school.
Principal Erla Erlendsdóttir says the new classrooms, which now house grades 1 through 4, have been warmly received for their strong acoustics, good ventilation, and easy accessibility. Each classroom opens to the outside, improving working conditions for students and staff.
Before these new classrooms arrived, the school relied on a range of temporary solutions. Around 100 students were partially housed at Seljakirkja for their Icelandic and math classes. Classes met across multiple locations, requiring students to move between them depending on the subject. Inside the school, staff used and continue to use various spaces — including offices, the library, and hallways — for instruction.
Installation of the new classrooms goes smoothly
Classroom preparation and installation began in January, prioritizing careful planning throughout the process. The project team held regular meetings to coordinate the large number of people involved. For a time, heavy vehicle traffic and a large on-site staff for both teaching and construction required close coordination. Crews successfully installed the classrooms in just over three months to accommodate the school's first four grades.
Students have embraced the changes and are excited about the new facilities. Parents are also pleased with the improved space after a period of cramped conditions.
Construction at the school is ongoing, with five additional classrooms expected in August and the possibility of two more. A needs assessment is also underway to guide the school's overall design and future development.
