Neighborhood watch — increased safety
Reykjavík City Hall hosted a public consultation on city safety yesterday afternoon. The meeting drew a strong turnout and covered a wide range of municipal safety topics.
Mayor Hildur Björnsdóttir opened the meeting and welcomed attendees. She highlighted the importance of meeting in person, discussing local issues, and hearing directly from residents on this vital matter.
Eyþór Víðisson, a safety specialist with Reykjavík City, presented on how residents can protect their homes from burglaries (link to slides). He urged residents to remain vigilant and secure their homes before leaving for work, school, or vacation, and shared a checklist (link).
Police officer Símon Geir Geirsson from the community police unit spoke about his team's role in monitoring young people throughout the city. He described the work as vital, explaining that prevention and education efforts in primary and secondary schools are guided by the goals of reducing crime and building trust among children and young people.
Deputy Police Commissioner Ásgeir Þór Ásgeirsson and Assistant Police Superintendent Ásmundur Rúnar Gylfason reviewed the current situation regarding burglaries in the city. They noted that most burglaries are opportunistic, typically committed by individuals with substance use issues who are already known to police. The officials urged residents to respond appropriately and report incidents to police, noting that doing so ensures cases are handled properly and helps identify those responsible. They also reported that burglaries have declined significantly over the past several weeks.
Neighborhood watch as prevention
The mayor then took the floor, announcing that the City is preparing a neighborhood watch initiative set to be introduced in the coming days. Neighborhood watch unites residents around shared prevention goals and is an essential part of improving neighborhood safety and reducing burglaries. This kind of cooperation brings people closer together and helps create safer, more enjoyable neighborhoods.
Attendees at the meeting could pick up neighborhood watch stickers to display on the inside of their windows, signaling that their home is part of a neighborhood watch. In the coming weeks, stickers will also be available at the Reykjavík City Hall front desk and at the City's service center in Borgartún.
Hildur noted that new neighborhood watch signs are being designed to replace the older ones still visible in many city neighborhoods. Streets that organize a neighborhood watch will have the opportunity to order the new signs and receive assistance with installation. She also noted that the City is working to expand its surveillance camera network and maintain strong, ongoing cooperation with police in support of a safe and welcoming city.
