Large and diverse upcoming projects
Reykjavík will launch a wide range of major projects over the next several years, focusing on infrastructure development, housing, environmental issues and green transportation. The City's investment plan details these initiatives, providing an overview of major projects currently in preparation or underway.
Reykjavík City's total investments reach 74.9 billion króna for the year. The investment plan decreases by 1.7 billion króna from the previous year, but continues to emphasize vital community infrastructure and sustainable development.
Expanding nursing wards and building schools
The City plans to spend approximately 14 billion króna on social infrastructure. Priorities include maintaining and constructing preschools and elementary schools, along with investments in sports and leisure facilities. The plan also allocates funds for cultural affairs, public health projects and welfare department initiatives, including expanding nursing wards and enlarging Konukot – Shelter for Homeless Women.
Specific upcoming projects include a new preschool at Fossvogsblettur, the temporary school campus in Laugardalur and Skólabrú in Vogabyggð, plus ongoing maintenance of the City's swimming pools.
Development in residential and business districts
Investments in residential districts total 1.8 billion króna and cover areas including Ártúnshöfði, Vogabyggð, Bryggjuhverfi, Úlfarsárdalur, Hlíðarendi, Hallar and Keldur. The plan also sets aside 805 million króna for business district development.
Housing development is a key part of the City's vision for the future. Over the past five years, approximately 1,100-1,200 residential units have been built annually, with about 35% of new housing expected to come from nonprofit organizations or as social housing. The Housing Plan for the next ten years identifies three key areas: Ártúnshöfði, Keldur and Hallar. Together, these areas can accommodate tens of thousands of residential units along with commercial space and school districts.
Environmental investments
Approximately 1.8 billion króna will go toward environmental issues and green spaces. Projects include updating garbage trucks, building recycling drop-offs, waterfront enhancement projects and a new cemetery at Úlfarsfell.
Green transportation will receive 3.8 billion króna in funding. This includes planned investments in paving, biking paths and traffic safety. The City will also renovate and improve accessibility at Strætó Public Transport bus stops.
