Happy Reykjavík Pride 2026
Reykjavík Pride kicks off today, with the opening ceremony taking place at Iðnó at noon. Reykjavík Pride is a Partner Festival and one of the most colorful celebrations of the year, running through Aug. 9.
Helga Haraldsdóttir, chair of Reykjavík Pride, spoke first, reflecting on the festival’s history and officially opening the celebration. Björg Magnúsdóttir, president of City Council, delivered a brief address.
The Pride flag was then raised to full staff on the flagpoles along the pedestrian bridge, after which Guðjón Þorgils performed this year's Reykjavík Pride song, "Fram á við," composed by him, Inga Auðbjörg, and Axel Ingi.
Guests were invited to take part in a craft activity and chalk messages on the pavement in front of the Pride Centre at Iðnó, where the LGBT+ Co-op is located on the second floor.

Reykjavík Pride Parade: the highlight of Reykjavík Pride
In the parade, lesbians, gay men, bisexual and pansexual people, transgender people, intersex people, and other LGBT+ individuals join their families and friends to assert their presence and highlight their causes. The parade serves as both a march for LGBT+ rights — calling for equality, awareness, and an end to discrimination — and a celebration of the progress achieved in that struggle.
This year's Reykjavík Pride Parade takes place Saturday, Aug. 8. The parade will depart from Hallgrímskirkja church at 2pm sharp. The route proceeds along Skólavörðustígur, Bankastræti, Lækjargata, and Fríkirkjuvegur. While the official parade route concludes at the intersection of Fríkirkjuvegur and Skothúsvegur, participants will proceed onto Sóleyjargata and into Hljómskálagarður park for the start of the outdoor concerts.
