The Children's Culture Festival opened with great fanfare at Harpa this morning. From April 20 to 26, families can enjoy a packed program of free events.

Mayor Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir officially opened the festival, inviting the children in the audience to join her in doing the wave. An entertainment program followed, kicking off with an Iceland Symphony Orchestra string quartet and a ballet performance.

The cast of The Wizard of Oz — currently running at the Reykjavík City Theater — also performed a scene. The Hringleikur Circus Company showcased its circus arts, and dancers from Brynja Pétur's dance school performed with tremendous energy.

VÆB then performed the official Children's Culture Festival song, "Sama hver það er," composed by brothers Matthías and Hálfdán in collaboration with fourth-grade students in Reykjavík. The kids enthusiastically joined in and danced along to the music, and the cheering seemed like it would never stop.
