European Mobility Week 2026
The annual European Mobility Week runs Sept. 16–22. The campaign encourages people to choose various sustainable transportation options that are affordable and healthy.
Since 2002, Icelandic municipalities have joined European cities in promoting sustainable transportation. The Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Climate oversees the Icelandic campaign. This year's theme is Transportation for All.
Organizations and municipalities will host events. Schedule information is available on the municipalities' homepages and the Mobility Week Facebook page.
Among the events on this year's schedule is the ITS transportation conference, taking place on the opening day of Mobility Week, Sept. 16.
To celebrate Mobility Week, Reykjavík Energy is hosting a Resource Loop tour in Elliðaárdalur on Sept. 17, and later that day at 4 p.m., BMX Bros will offer a class and exhibit at Miðbæjartorg square in Mosfellsbær.
Transport for the Capital Area and Public Transit — formerly Strætó Public Transport — will host an open house Sept. 18 from 2 to 4 p.m. at its new Hafnarstræti 7 offices.
Officials will formally dedicate a new cycling and pedestrian bridge over the Elliðaár river near Dimma on Sept. 21 at 9:30 a.m.
The campaign concludes with Car-Free Day on Sept. 22, when the public is encouraged to leave their cars at home. To make that easier, city bus service in the capital area will be free.
That same day, the Icelandic Transport Authority will host a Road Safety Forum focused on young people and traffic.
