Draft revised language policy now open for public consultation
A draft of Reykjavík City's revised language policy for 2026-2030 is now available on the city's Consultation Portal. The portal gathers residents' ideas and feedback on various city projects.
Anyone can submit an official statement through the Consultation Portal, and we encourage residents and others to review the policy and share their feedback. Several stakeholders also received invitations to participate.
This draft updates the language policy that received approval in 2017. The city requested official statements through the Consultation Portal because the issue carries broad relevance and social conditions have shifted significantly since the policy was approved.
The revision incorporated instructions from the Icelandic Language Committee, alongside other Reykjavík City policy frameworks. Officials also sought input from a range of specialists and stakeholders. The working group aimed to develop a clear, accessible policy backed by explanations and supporting material in an accompanying report, alongside a concrete action plan grounded in the policy and stakeholder calls for progress.
The policy, report, and action plan are available on the Consultation Portal in Icelandic, English, and Polish. The consultation period runs for two weeks, closing May 1st
