Dance and martial arts center in Breiðholt
A new dance and martial arts center planned for Breiðholt is designed to create a vibrant hub for neighborhood sports and community activities.
The facility will sit near Gerðuberg, adjacent to the existing sports and services center, further cementing the area as a central hub in Upper Breiðholt. During today's City Executive Council meeting, members approved advancing preparations and launching an idea search for the project.
Idea search to begin
The project will unfold in a two-phase process, starting with a comprehensive analysis of its needs and parameters. Working alongside stakeholders, counselors will shape a vision for the facility and define concepts for its use, size, scope, and operational model.
An upcoming idea search will then invite three to five design teams to submit building proposals. The City will subsequently select one winning proposal for further development.
Preparations and the idea search are slated to begin in April 2026.
"I view this as a crucial step toward strengthening both local sports and the broader Breiðholt community. Its location near Gerðuberg, right by the existing sports and services center, reinforces the area as a lively and well-connected hub in Upper Breiðholt. This addition will expand opportunities for physical activity, participation, and community connection," said Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir, mayor.
