CityLine development at Hlemmtorg
Work will begin in the coming days to redevelop the northern part of Hlemmur, intersections, and street corridors, create a new square, and build CityLine infrastructure at Hlemmtorg. This phase of construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
A public transportation space in a calm, safe setting
A contract has been signed with earthworks company Grafa og Grjót ehf. to carry out this next phase of construction. The goal is to create an inviting, walkable urban space with new paving, seating areas and greenery.
Construction will transform Hlemmtorg into a major urban hub with more space for pedestrians and cyclists, along with facilities for public transportation, which will be the only motorized traffic allowed through the square.
This work is part of the first phase of CityLine, with traffic lanes reserved for public transportation and emergency responders. The intersection of Snorrabraut and Hverfisgata will be rebuilt as part of the construction, along with the section of Snorrabraut from Bríetartún to Hverfisgata. The CityLine route through the square at Hlemmur will be built, and a CityLine stop will be installed there. Sewer, water supply, and district heating pipes, electrical wiring, telecommunications lines, and traffic signal wiring will be replaced at the same time.
The development will enhance connections through the city center, support environmentally friendly transportation, and improve access for people traveling through the area. Reykjavík City, Veitur Utilities, and Transport for the Capital Area are working together to renew infrastructure at Hlemmur.
