Agreements reached with Gróðrarstöðin Mörk, Víkingur, and Valur

The City Executive Council approved two agreements: one with Gróðrarstöðin Mörk securing the continued partial operation of the nursery at Stjörnugróf 18, and another with Knattspyrnufélagið Víking establishing a long-term vision for the club's facilities at Stjörnugróf and Safamýri. Ownership of Víking's existing sports facilities at Traðarland 1 will also transfer to Reykjavík City, which will assume responsibility for their maintenance and further development. 

The City Executive Council also approved an agreement with Knattspyrnufélagið Val to transfer ownership of the club's existing sports facilities to Reykjavík City under the same terms.

Agreement with Gróðrarstöðin Mörk

This matter dates back to a July 10, 2008, City Executive Council decision, when the council approved the former mayor's proposal to commit to expanding Knattspyrnufélagið Víking's operational area once the lot lease agreement with Gróðrarstöðin Mörk expired in 2016. That binding commitment guaranteed Knattspyrnufélagið Víking priority access to at least part of the Stjörnugróf site, provided the club met certain conditions. 

The agreement between Reykjavík City and Gróðrarstöðin Mörk extends the company's land-use rights through 2050, though the nursery must return portions of the site in two stages: first at the end of this year, and again in 2032. Following these transfers, Gróðrarstöðin Mörk will retain roughly half the site through 2050, ensuring its continued operation.

"This solution looks both to the future development of sports and to protecting established businesses and local jobs. We are building a clearer long-term vision for Safamýri and Traðarland, allowing the sports and school community to continue growing alongside the neighborhood," Mayor Heiða Björg said.

Gróðrarstöðin Mörk owners Guðmundur Vernharðsson and Sigríður Helga Sigurðardóttir welcome the resolution and the greater certainty it provides.

"While the outcome is not what we had hoped for, we are glad this lengthy process has finally come to an end. This outcome undeniably deals a significant blow to our company. We will lose production capacity and available space, and we will face considerable costs in the process. Those expenses include relocating approximately 200 square meters of facilities within the portion of the site we are retaining.

We want to express our gratitude to the current majority for stepping up and breaking this long-standing impasse. We are also grateful to the Chief Executive Officer and the mayor for their support and for standing by us throughout this difficult process.

We plan to look ahead with optimism and focus on building for the future. We will no longer worry about how the City and Víkingur plan to use the area, directing our energy instead toward our own operations and next steps."

Agreement with Knattspyrnufélagið Víking

The City Executive Council also approved an agreement covering the future ownership, development, and maintenance of Víking's sports facilities at Traðarland, alongside the club's development in Safamýri. The agreement centers on a long-term vision to expand Víking's operational area at Stjörnugróf 18—including timelines for planned changes—and further development in Safamýri, which will feature a sports hall and infrastructure improvements supporting neighborhood sports and school operations. Ownership of all Víking's sports facilities will transfer to Reykjavík City by the end of 2026.  Urgent interior and exterior maintenance will be completed, alongside constructing a third floor on the clubhouse to support operations and carrying out other development work.

Knattspyrnufélagið Víking chair Björn Einarsson welcomed the agreements regarding the future development of the club's facilities and expressed relief that the matter is finally resolved. "This comprehensive agreement prioritizes the needs of the entire club alongside other stakeholders in Víking's neighborhoods. The planned development reflects a clear, shared ambition between Víkingur and the City to keep advancing and achieving success across all club areas for decades to come. The club extends its deepest thanks to the negotiating team and Reykjavík City for their collaboration."

Agreement with Knattspyrnufélagið Val

An agreement was also reached to transfer ownership of Val's sports facilities to Reykjavík City. Today's agreement builds on a previous arrangement between Knattspyrnufélagið Val, Hlíðarendi, and Reykjavík City approved by the City Executive Council on Dec. 14, 2023, and aligns with Reykjavík City's negotiating objectives for transferring ownership of neighborhood sports club structures, approved by the City Executive Council on March 26, 2026th 

With this agreement, Reykjavík City has fully executed the City Executive Council's 2023 decision to review ownership of the Hlíðarendi sports facilities and transition their operations to the City.
