After-school program staffing is better than a year ago
The latest placement figures show that 3,991 children, or 97% of applicants, have been offered an opening in an after-school program. Of those, 129 children have not received care for all requested hours, representing about 3% of all applications. Another 131 children, also about 3%, remain on a waitlist. A total of 4,122 applications were submitted this fall.
Most after-school programs are fully staffed
The staffing situation has improved considerably since last year. At this time last year, 3,576 children, or 90%, had received an opening, while 384 children, or 10%, were on a waitlist. At that time, 143 children had not received care for all requested hours, and the total number of applications was 3,960.
Although conditions are better than a year ago, challenges remain at a few workplaces, while most after-school programs have short waitlists or none at all. Based on current needs, an estimated eight to nine additional staff members are required to fill just over four full-time equivalent positions.
