Traffic light timing adjustments on Bústaðavegur

The review of traffic light timing is part of the Transportation Charter for the capital area, with the project aiming to enhance safety and efficiency of the city's traffic signals. The city engaged consultants to evaluate current traffic signal timing in Reykjavík and update it based on recent traffic counts.
The consultants have completed their assessment for Bústaðavegur east of Kringlumýrarbraut, and the time has come to implement the new traffic signal timing. The primary change addresses a previous limitation where side streets and pedestrian crossings on Bústaðavegur were restricted to specific time windows for green lights due to coordination with nearby intersections. The new timing system eliminates these restricted windows, allowing side streets and pedestrian crossings to receive green lights at any time. According to the consultants' analysis, average delays are expected to decrease by 1-8 seconds per vehicle at all intersections during morning and afternoon rush hours.
The new traffic signal timing will go into effect at 10am Wednesday, March 12.
