Temporary CityLine connection across Miklabraut
The Environment and Planning Council today approved authorization for continued preparation, design work and creation of tender documents for the CityLine connection across Miklabraut to Hlíðarendi.
Under the approved proposal, Arnarhlíð will be extended in its final form to include a ramp from Hringbraut to Bústaðavegur and dedicated space as space allows on Bústaðavegur to Burknagata.
Preparation work is underway for the first phase of CityLine, between Ártúnshöfði and Hamraborg, through the center of Reykjavík. Part of that route includes extending Arnarhlíð across Miklabraut to the intersection of Burknagata and Snorrabraut. Arnarhlíð cannot be extended all the way to Burknagata as planned until the Miklabraut tunnel is complete. Until then, a temporary solution is needed for CityLine service between Landspítali Hospital and the bridge over Fossvogur.
The proposal under further development includes the following elements:
- Dedicated lanes for public transportation, walking and cycling along Arnarhlíð (continuing from existing Arnarhlíð) to the southwest ramp of Hringbraut.
- An underpass beneath the new section of Arnarhlíð with safe pedestrian crossings at both ends
- Traffic light-controlled intersection and dedicated lane for public transportation heading east over the Bústaðavegur bridge.
- Fewer lanes heading north over the bridge and changes to the ramp from Bústaðavegur east onto Miklabraut.
The Arnarhlíð connection is expected to be ready for public transportation at the same time the new Alda bridge over Fossvogur opens. These coordinated projects will greatly improve public transportation services. The total project cost is estimated at about 1.5 billion króna, with approximately two-thirds of that cost carrying over to the final design.
The next preparation steps include additional design work and consultation with stakeholders. Construction is expected to begin in late 2026 or early 2027. The project is part of the capital area's Transportation Charter and is being developed with the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration and Transport for the Capital Area.
