Teens propose ideas for a vibrant and safe neighborhood
About 100 teenagers and young people from Breiðholt attended an open youth meeting at Ölduselsskóli last week, called by the mayor. They had the opportunity to discuss their ideas and concerns directly with the mayor. The goal was to "refresh" politics with fresh perspectives from young people.
Christmas village idea in Seljahverfi receives enthusiastic applause
The young people's ideas for improving the neighborhood were diverse and interesting. Safety and environmental issues were top priorities for them, with many also emphasizing more social activities and gathering spaces for all young people in Breiðholt. One idea that drew the loudest applause was setting up a Christmas village by the pond near Seljaskóli, an exciting concept that could create a new gathering place in the neighborhood.
Food hall and gym in Mjódd
The young people's suggestions were numerous and covered a wide range of topics. They wanted to see a food hall, ice cream shop and gym in Mjódd, improved basketball facilities with covered areas, and a dedicated space for the 16+ group with varied programming. Environmental issues were also prominent, with emphasis on more trash cans, water fountains, flowers, benches and security cameras.
At the top of many groups' wish lists were ideas like a skateboard park, a covered barbecue area, and playground equipment similar to what's in Gufunes. There was also a call for increased sex education and for the vape shop in Mjódd to be removed. Many also wanted to see a police station in Mjódd and for city bus service to be free for primary and secondary school students.
Want the bars removed
Eighth-grade students from Hólabrekkuskóli — Nejla, Elsa, Ísabella and Sonja — were pleased with the teen forum. Among other suggestions, they proposed closing the bars near Gerðuberg and in Hólagarður, as they attract intoxicated people who create unsafe conditions for children and teens walking home from recreation programs. They also wanted city bus rides to be free for everyone under 18.
Want to get residents outdoors to create a lively environment
Representatives from Fjölbrautaskólinn í Breiðholti's 16+ program, Tung and Saulo, emphasized better street lighting in Efra-Breiðholt, a tidier environment and more outdoor recreation areas. They wanted to see outdoor grills and events in Efra-Breiðholt or in Elliðaárdalur near the neighborhood to encourage people to spend more time outside year-round. "If more people are outside, the environment becomes safer,“ said Saulo. Tung also mentioned ideas about expanding the area around the swimming pool, and Saulo added: "You sleep so well after the cold tub and sauna!" Both talked about how a covered and lit basketball court would attract young people in Breiðholt and even from other neighborhoods.
